Why 301 redirects matter for SEO

When a URL changes, a 301 (permanent) redirect sends both visitors and search engines to the new address — and passes almost all of the old page's ranking value along with them. Skip the redirects during a migration and you lose rankings, backlinks and traffic overnight.

301 or 302 — which should I use?
Use 301 for permanent changes (migrations, renamed pages) so ranking value transfers. Use 302 only for genuinely temporary moves.
Can I redirect a whole old domain?
Yes, but map URLs one-to-one wherever possible rather than blanket-redirecting to the homepage — page-level redirects preserve far more of your SEO value.
